A few weeks back, we caught up with Stuart & Sandra for an ‘encore’ photo session.

We had the pleasure of photographing Sandra last year during our Auckland Bride Parade photo shoot – so it was lovely to get the chance to capture some cool images with her husband, too!

They have a cool Mini – which we managed to work into the shots throughout the day.

We were treated to a pretty spectacular sunset, too!

One of Stuart’s passions is vintage aeroplanes. We couldn’t shoot at an airfield – but the next best thing was being able to mix the mini, and a hangar, into this – the last frame of the night – combining all the elements.

It makes us sad when we hear about people who have had their wedding… waited with anticipation for their photos back from the photographer… and are really disappointed with them.

This was the case for Jason & Heather – who were married in Ohope earlier this year.

They got in touch with us, and organized a photo shoot with Perspectives – we traveled down from Auckland to Ohope, and met up with them & their bridal party for a super fun afternoon. We even were lucky enough to be shooting on the day of the ‘super moon’ – so the last few shots feature that.

Here’s a little sneak peek of what we captured for them. Even though it isn’t the actual wedding day – we are stoked to be able to give them some shots that show off how gorgeous they really are.

I can’t believe it was only a couple of weeks ago that we were relaxing in the sun in Raro… the bitter cold here in Auckland at the moment makes it seem a lifetime ago.

Jeff & Marie had their wedding at the stunning Crown Beach resort, on one of the sunniest days of that week. Talk about being blessed with perfect weather.

In the morning, we headed around to Marie’s room – where one of the first things we saw was this cool poster, designed by a friend of theirs. We knew right away – this was going to be a cruisy, relaxed day with the emphasis in the right places!

As they were both getting ready in separate rooms at Crown Beach, we were easily able to float between Jeff & Marie’s respective rooms – to capture the excitement (Marie) and nerves (Jeff) of the morning.

Amber came into the room, somewhat apologetically, and said she had found this gorgeous patch of light and we just had to get a few shots there. The only catch? It’s in the shower. Lucky for us, Marie was up for anything.. so in we went. On the left is me, taking the photo… and on the right, the finished product.

Wait until you see the ‘trash the dress’ version the next day!

Jeff & Marie decided that they wanted to have a private moment before the ceremony where they could see each other for the first time.

They had said before the wedding ‘let’s not get presents for one another’… and then Jeff arrived with a gift for Marie, and likewise, Marie had bought a gift for Jeff! The moral of this story is – when your fiance says ‘I’m not buying a gift’… you should just get one in case

Next step was to head out for some pre-ceremony photos around the island.

When we stopped to ask permission to shoot in this field – the owners said “of course… but, why would you want to?” The beauty on everyone’s doorstep in Raro blows me away every time.

It was so hot in the midday sun once we arrived down at the beach, so we grabbed a few shots & then made for the aircon!

Back at the room, after a quick touch up, Marie’s dad arrived & it was time to head down for the ceremony. I love this little patch of light streaming through above the doorway – very angelic.

The boys watched expectantly as the girls walked along the beach and up through the archway.

After the ceremony, the guests sipped on cocktails – while Jeff & Marie sneaked a few photos in the gardens around Crown Beach.

The marquee reception was right on the beachfront – which afforded everyone a perfect view of this sunset.

With a few cool dance moves, the reception was officially underway.

There’s a magic time of day (well, almost night) when the sky is so dark that it matches the brightness of the artificial lighting around the place. We shot this back through the material of the wedding arch, which gusted in the breeze at just the right time to frame up the marquee in the center.

Jeff didn’t actually end up using many of his speech notes – Marie had most people in tears with her amazing story of their love… so Jeff ended up ad-libbing a bit to catch up!

The dancefloor was simple – the beach. Everyone danced away the rest of the evening with the sand between their toes.

The next afternoon, we caught up with Jeff & Marie again, for round two!

We love shooting ‘trash the dress’ sessions in Raro – it’s a great chance to get out and about, and be a little bit more adventurous with your dress.

We were shooting on the rocks up above this churning cauldron of waves crashing over the reef. I think Jeff saw me looking at it – and read my mind.

“Can we do some photos down there?”

Yes.

It’s a shot we’ve had in our heads for a while, but haven’t done yet because it’s kinda sketchy. Massive surf. Surges over the reef. We watched it for 5 minutes, and I went down and stood in the water to assess how strong the surges were… to make sure they wouldn’t be swept out to sea. Tentatively (us) or with gusto (Jeff & Marie) – they got into the sea.

And this is what followed.

After a while, we moved to calmer waters…

We shot underwater for about as long as Jeff & Marie still had breath / energy – I was amazed at how long they kept it up – wet wedding clothes are HEAVY!

Remember the shot in the shower, on the wedding day? We couldn’t resist finishing up the trash the dress session with a repeat, with water on.

As it happens they guys have it pretty easy in the morning so Phillip took the boys out for a last hurrah before saying the all important “i do’s”. So golf and go karts it was! Mat had a blast filming that!

.. and I got to hang out with the girls! We had fun. And I have to say (and this is a bit weird coming from a guy) but Kathryn’s flowers were actually amazing! I’ve filmed many weddings and these flowers are right up there. So it’s time for a plug. Miss Daisy Flower Shop

Both Phillip and Kathryn were a blast to be around. They are both full of life and so positive to everyone around them. It was great to see.

Last week, we had the pleasure of photographing Todd & Jenny’s gorgeous wedding at the Tamarind House restaurant.

We headed around to catch up with the boys first off – they were having a relaxing morning chilling out in the sun

Jenny had kept her dress a secret from everyone, even her bridesmaids!

So we felt really privileged to get inside for a little sneak peek at her dress, and to be on-hand to catch everyone’s reactions once she walked out into the lounge.

There was a cool patch of light coming through the window, making for a great little spotlight to sit in!

One of the coolest things about having your guests staying at the same resort as you… is that you can peek out the windows & check out how everyone is looking as they leave for the ceremony!

Jenny’s dress had a really gorgeous slip-over layer of lace, which had a beautiful long train… and also meant we could whip it off when we did their ‘drown the gown’ shoot 2 days later.

After the ceremony, we headed down onto the beach right outside the Tamarind House, where the coconut trees framed the perfect horizon & blue ocean.

One of the resident cats at the Tamarind House decided that the back of Jenny’s dress would be a cool plaything… it stalked her around the place!

The appearance of the cat was pretty cool, apparently!

We were racing the sunset by this stage, so we headed up the road to witness the beauty of the sky lighting up… and Todd & Jenny had the chance to sneak in a quick ‘first dance’ practice too.

The sunset was suitably awesome – and we got our lights out to make the most of the dramatic feel

Back at the Tamarind House, it was essentially fully dark… the guests were waiting inside for Todd & Jenny to make their entrance… but we managed to sneak in a few extra shots. I love this one on the platform… backlit against the night sky.

The reception was fantastic – great food, beautiful speeches, and some fantastic dancing. What more could you ask for?

That was the end of the wedding… but not the end of the photos!

2 days later, we caught up with Todd & Jenny again, and spent the morning getting some really fun shots around the island… just a good chance to get a bit more adventurous, without the time limitations of the wedding day… and even getting the dress wet at the end. Here’s what we captured.

Jeremy and Katie live in Australia and both work in hospitality industry. They came back to New Zealand to get married and choose The Pear Tree up in Kerikeri as the place to wed mainly because of the great food they serve!  So I knew food and wine were going to feature in their film pretty early on.

Sometimes I feel there’s two set’s of vows on a wedding day. One at the ceremony and one during the speeches. Both Jeremy and Katie put thought and time into what they wanted to say to each other. It’s one of the only times for a couple to say publicly how much they mean to each other, so it was really nice to be able to include this in their film as it unfolded too.

We had a blast filming it and it was defiantly worth the trip up north!

This film was in a way tricky to bring together. There were so many things I wanted to say and moods I wanted to convey. After a couple of late nights, things started to fit and I found the perfect song to glue it all together. I decided not to tell their story through the chronological order of what happened on the day but instead through two themes that arose on the day.

The first half of the film conveys the weight and importance that getting married brings. From the anticipation and nervousness that Jeremy showed to the significance of marriage that the celebrant spoke of.

The second half of the film highlights the celebrations, community, food and wine that was enjoyed on the day. The words that both Jeremy and Katie spoke really highlighted the love each has for one other. Their speeches really help to tie the whole film together too!

A couple of weeks ago, we headed down to Cambridge, to photograph Scott & Ashleigh’s stunning autumn wedding at Sarnia Park.

Here’s a little glimpse at how the day unfolded.

We’ve seen cufflinks. Hip flasks. Bottle Openers. But – in what takes the cake for one of the coolest groomsman’s presents ever – Scott gifted his boys a Leatherman multi tool… awesome!

We headed over to Cambridge, where Ashleigh & her bridesmaids had their hair & makeup done in a cute little B&B near lake Karapiro.

Ashleigh’s bridesmaids were awesome – they even made sure they knew their aisle ‘walk times’ down to the second, in sync with the song!

Out at Sarnia Park, the bridal suite provided a gorgeous backdrop for Ashleigh to get into her stunning Jane Yeh wedding gown, and get a few beautiful bridal shots before the ceremony kicked off.

The ceremony was on the Croquet Lawn – which has a perfect little pagola, and some great angles to shoot too. It’s one of our fav spots at Sarnia Park! Their ceremony was beautiful. Very emotional, and there weren’t many dry eyes throughout the entire group of guests.

We headed off for a few photos with Scott, Ashleigh, and their bridal party. We began onsite at Sarnia…

Next stop was one of our favourite locations, just up the road. Scott & Ashleigh met one another through a shared love of competitive cycling – so it was perfectly fitting that they’d managed to find this cool vintage bike, which we worked into a few images.

Back at Sarnia Park – we arrived for the afternoon reception. It was a relaxed, intimate affair, which was hosted in the main lodge – which meant they had the chance to make an awesome entrance down the staircase! We made certain to document it from all angles

This was followed by an impressive first dance on the ballroom floor…

Shortly afterwards, we ducked back outside for 30 minutes of late afternoon photos. We were racing the sunlight, and had to move spots a few times as the shadows advanced & steadily ate the last rays of light. Once the sun dipped once & truly below the horizon, we were treated to an awesome sunset – so we quickly unpacked our lighting setup from the car to make the most of it!

Our fabulous assistant Holly never ceases to amaze. While we were setting up the lights, she was capturing this gorgeous silhouette shot.

These next two shots are a great example of how different lens choices affect a photo. Shot within seconds of one another, the first is a wide angle lens which emphasizes the sky, clouds, and overall scene. You can see the line of trees, tiny in the distance. The second shot uses a zoom lens to compress the background, and makes the most of those trees as a structural element. /end photography geekiness.

A few weeks ago, we headed out to one of our favourite Auckland venues – Gracehill, in Kumeu. It’s just down the road from our studio – so we are really familiar with the local area, all the best places to shoot, and nearby Muriwai beach.

When we caught up with the boys earlier in the day, Jason was making sure everything was looking perfect:

Jacqui and her bridesmaids were getting ready at a B&B that was almost next door to Gracehill… you can’t get much closer to being ‘on-site’!

Makeup photo… Perspectives style.

Jacqui looked stunning in her wedding gown – I love the lace detailing!

Down at Gracehill, the guests were ready & waiting – and the sun was dipping lower in the perfect blue sky. Jacqui arrived, and Jason nervously waited up the front for things to get underway!

The plan was to head over to Muriwai beach for some photos – but we were racing the sun already by this stage, and we made the call to use one of our nearby backup locations. Luckily – as we only had about 10 minutes of sunlight, before it disappeared once and for all!

We headed back to Gracehill, just in time to catch this awesome sunset by the lake! If we could pick any time of day to shoot, it would be this. We had around 45 minutes before, and 45 minutes after, sunset – it means we get the lovely golden sunlight above, plus sunset, and then bringing out the lighting gear for some cool night shots. Best of both worlds!

A few weeks back, we headed down from Auckland to photograph Blair & Leigh’s gorgeous wedding at Vilagrad Winery in Hamilton.

The boys got ready at the Novotel … and we headed around to catch up with them in the morning:

Q: What do you get when you cross an Italian and a Mexican?

A: An awesomely styled reception, complete with mini bottles of Tequila and Grappa!

We arrived out at Vilagrad to find this gorgeous setup, which reflected both Leigh & Blair’s family backgrounds. So cool!

I think Holly has some competition for her role as assistant photographer!

A short walk for us (and an even shorter drive for Leigh!) – and we were over at the Vilagrad ceremony area. A short wait, while someone raced home to collect the wedding license – and we were good to go!

I love this next sequence. ‘Sweet – I get to kiss Leigh.” … “oohhh… did Blair see me?”

For the majority of the bridal party photos, we headed off-site to a couple of nearby locations. We had some cool late afternoon backlight… one of the many reasons why we think autumn is the best season to have your wedding!

We headed down to our second spot – where we found a cool tree branch to relax on.

The last rays of sunlight for the day always make for incredible shots – golden & lovely. It’s so refreshing to have this time of day occurring around 6pm, as opposed to 9.30pm in the height of summer!

“JARED!!! I am in tears. That absolutely blew us away, your ability to capture the essence of our day is amazing. Thank you so much for creating those memories for us. We are SOOOOOOOOOOOO happy! …… Seriously Jared my words are not enough to express my happiness!!!!!!!!! Thank you SO much.” 

As a wedding filmmaker I obviously see a lot of weddings.  And although the structure and tradition of a wedding day are quite similar, the people and their experiences are always different.  This is what I look for during the wedding day and how I craft my films.

Jason and his groomsmen started the day with a good dosage of Jackass and laughter.  A great way to calm the nerves!

Victoria lost her mum a couple of years back so she visited the cemetery on the way to the ceremony.  So it was also important to include this in the edit.

And lastly there was the dancing.  All the formalities were out of the way and a chance for Jason and Victoria to let their hair down and celebrate the start of a new life together.  This really was when the party started.  I also have to put a plug out to The Monroes who are seriously one of the best wedding bands I’ve come across.  It was impossible to not include them in the edit as they interacted with the wedding guests so well.  They were rocking it out on the dance floor – the guests were onstage singing through the microphone.  It made for a great ending to a pretty cool day.
