Gracehill Wedding Photos – Jason & Jacqui’s beautiful autumn wedding

Hi guys,

A few weeks ago, we headed out to one of our favourite Auckland venues – Gracehill, in Kumeu. It’s just down the road from our studio – so we are really familiar with the local area, all the best places to shoot, and nearby Muriwai beach.

When we caught up with the boys earlier in the day, Jason was making sure everything was looking perfect:

Vilagrad Winery wedding photos – Blair & Leigh’s sneak peek

Hi guys,

A few weeks back, we headed down from Auckland to photograph Blair & Leigh’s gorgeous wedding at Vilagrad Winery in Hamilton.

The boys got ready at the Novotel … and we headed around to catch up with them in the morning:

Q: What do you get when you cross an Italian and a Mexican?

A: An awesomely styled reception, complete with mini bottles of Tequila and Grappa!

We arrived out at Vilagrad to find this gorgeous setup, which reflected both Leigh & Blair’s family backgrounds. So cool!

I think Holly has some competition for her role as assistant photographer!

How stunning & elegant does Leigh look in her gown!

A short walk for us (and an even shorter drive for Leigh!) – and we were over at the Vilagrad ceremony area. A short wait, while someone raced home to collect the wedding license – and we were good to go!

I love this next sequence. ‘Sweet – I get to kiss Leigh.” … “oohhh… did Blair see me?”

For the majority of the bridal party photos, we headed off-site to a couple of nearby locations. We had some cool late afternoon backlight… one of the many reasons why we think autumn is the best season to have your wedding!

The last rays of sunlight for the day always make for incredible shots – golden & lovely. It’s so refreshing to have this time of day occurring around 6pm, as opposed to 9.30pm in the height of summer!

Auckland Wedding Videographer: Party Time – Jason + Victoria’s Woodland Wedding

This is the email I got back from Victoria after she just saw their film … kinda made my day!

“JARED!!! I am in tears. That absolutely blew us away, your ability to capture the essence of our day is amazing. Thank you so much for creating those memories for us. We are SOOOOOOOOOOOO happy! …… Seriously Jared my words are not enough to express my happiness!!!!!!!!! Thank you SO much.”

As a wedding filmmaker I obviously see a lot of weddings.  And although the structure and tradition of a wedding day are quite similar, the people and their experiences are always different.  This is what I look for during the wedding day and how I craft my films.

Jason and his groomsmen started the day with a good dosage of Jackass and laughter.  A great way to calm the nerves!

Victoria lost her mum a couple of years back so she visited the cemetery on the way to the ceremony.  So it was also important to include this in the edit.

And lastly there was the dancing.  All the formalities were out of the way and a chance for Jason and Victoria to let their hair down and celebrate the start of a new life together.  This really was when the party started.  I also have to put a plug out to The Monroes who are seriously one of the best wedding bands I’ve come across.  It was impossible to not include them in the edit as they interacted with the wedding guests so well.  They were rocking it out on the dance floor – the guests were onstage singing through the microphone.  It made for a great ending to a pretty cool day.

Rotorua AgroVentures: One Crazy Day

Today we filmed a promo film for Agroventures in Rototua. I just thought I’d put up some photos super quick so you get an idea for the fun we had!

Actually filming 5 activities in 7 hours was a tall order but we made it … just! So please excuse the average photos. We were too busy thinking film!

Me practicing my shot (on ground) so I wouldn’t fall out when we got up to the top of the bungy!

Mat gets all the cool jobs.  As i was up in the bungy crane admiring the view, Mat was standing in freezing cold water to get the shot from beneath the jumper.  Commitment Mat!

This guy was the man.

Me trying to give directions to the jet boat driver.  ”you know, that corner over there … next to the water. can you make a splash for me?  My communications skills aren’t always that great.  Ask Mat.

Ohope Wedding Photos – Tom & Suzanne’s sneak peek

Tom & Suzanne live in London. We live in Auckland. And we all met down in Ohope beach, near Whakatane, on a sunny afternoon for their stunning wedding out in the bush on Tom’s parent’s property.

Tom’s two brothers were his groomsmen.. and we kicked off our day around at the boys’ place, as they got ready.

Around at the girls… everyone was super organized & laid back. Getting ready onsite at the ceremony meant that even travel wasn’t a concern… it was all like clockwork!
Suzanne had selected her dress & brought it home from London.. and it was stunning!

It was so bright & sunny outside that we needed to either go directly with, or directly against, the light. I love that in almost exactly the same spot, from different angles, we got these next two shots.

Ohope wedding photos

We headed down from the house and into the bush, where Tom & the guests were waiting expectantly. We asked them when we initially caught up to chat about the details… “so – why the ceremony at 1pm?” The answer: They needed to make sure the estuary behind the ceremony was full – the difference between gorgeous blue… or mudpit. Good thinking!

Shooting back with the sunlight… Tom & Suzanne had their very own natural spotlight.

Ohope wedding photos

After the ceremony, they planted a kauri tree in the exact spot where they were standing… such a cool memory that will last for generations!

Ohope wedding photos

Earlier in the day… we had scoped out 2 potential photo spots down in the bush, and Tom & Suzanne had another 2 favs as well. While we were standing around up the top of the driveway deciding which location we’d head to first… we noticed that everyone was standing in this perfect light. So we added another impromptu option, beginning right there & then!

This tree was covered in moss that hung from the branches.. very cool!

Autumn leaves covered the ground through this little passage of trees… the sandflies loved it in there, too!

In the next two shots, we’re looking up into one of the biggest Kahikatea trees I’ve ever seen, it was huge!!

On the way up out of the bush, we stopped in this cool little field…

Before the reception, we headed down to Ohope beach for a few shots down on the sand. The light was perfect – a patch of late afternoon sunlight running down the beach & lighting them up against the dark clouds. Just the kind of light we love!

Ohope wedding photos

These next two images were shot within seconds of one another – Amber & I each using different lenses. It’s cool how they feel like such different photos, and is one of the benefits of having two photographers… double the shots in the same time!

Tom & Suzanne had the chance to practice a few dance steps to put into use later that evening…

Back at their reception, the guests were relaxing in the sun. Lawn games, a fiercely competitive cricket match, and nice wine was the order of the evening.

This is a new croquet technique.. bounce off your teammate’s shoes and on towards the next hoop.

There were some awesomely close games of petanque, too… straight into the sun was tricky going, and made for some awesome throwing styles.

Tom had brought a huge bottle of Champagne with him from France.. and as a ‘boys’ version of the bouquet toss… it was up to the guys to try catch the cork.

It was Suzanne’s turn… and awesome to have her sister take the honours :)

Ohope wedding photos

The guests headed into the marquee to take their seats for dinner. We spotted the sun dipping below the hills… and figured that while people were organizing themselves, we’d steal Tom & Suzanne for a few last shots in our favourite kind of sunlight.

We then left Tom & Suzanne to enjoy their evening…and after a quick stop at Sandcastle (best burgers EVER) we made the trek back to Auckland … because we couldn’t wait to get home and upload these photos to look at!

Sarnia Park Cambridge Wedding Photos – Kelly & Donna’s sneak peek!

Hi guys,

A few weeks ago, we headed down to Sarnia Park – one of our favourite Waikato venues – to photograph Kelly & Donna’s gorgeous wedding day :)

We kicked off the morning around at Donna’s parent’s place…

Around at Sarnia Park, Kelly & the boys were getting ready… I don’t think I’ve ever come across a wedding where the taste in music has been so similar to mine! I tapped my foot along to Pennywise, Rage Against the Machine, and Sublime while happily shooting away!

Auckland Trash the Dress photos – Jess & Adam’s sunset beach shoot!

Hi guys,

A while ago – we had the pleasure of meeting a gorgeous Canadian couple – Jess & Adam. They were over visiting family in New Zealand… and Jess brought her wedding dress over from the other side of the world… to put it through it’s paces on our West Coast beaches.

We had so much fun, out in the water with them both… and they did amazingly well!

Without further ado… her’s a little of what we came up with :)

Blue Baths Rotorua wedding photos – Sam & Lisa’s sneak peek!

Hi guys,

A few weeks ago, we headed down from Auckland to Rotorua… where we photographed the stunning wedding of Sam & Lisa, at the Government Gardens – and their reception at the Blue Baths.

When we arrived in the morning… a too-long belt had the boys were attacking it with a variety of kitchen instruments…

Operation completed… Sam and his groomsmen got dressed… and then a quick game of pool was in order :)

To capture this next image, we had to duck right down over a boiling pool, with the camera nearly dangling into the steaming water. The sun streaming through behind them perfectly pops out the steam rising from the lake..

Back outside the reception, we shot the left-hand image just as we arrived back, in the late afternoon sun. The right hand image is in exactly the same place, at twilight. It’s amazing how it looks so different!

As Sam & Lisa headed into the reception, Sam’s school friends welcomed them with the school haka. It was really awesome to see!

During the evening, they played a ‘wedding game’ … where they needed to raise a shoe to represent each person. Questions like “who owns the most pairs of shoes” … resulted in reactions like this…

It came time to toss the bouquet & garter…

Sam & Lisa had choreographed an impressive routine for their first dance…

Auckland Wedding Videographer – Matt + Aimee’s Okahu Wedding

Here’s the comment I got from Aimee after seeing the film for the first time:  ”… you know, a weird thought popped into my head on watching it- that being, i love all your work, but what i love about this video is that it is so so different and unexpectedly so, compared to the others I have seen…!”

Matt + Aimee from Perspectives Photo + Cinema on Vimeo.

One thing we try our best to do is make each film unique to the couple who are getting married.  This starts with a meeting months before the wedding day getting to know who they are as a couple and what makes them tick.  It also takes active observation on the wedding day to pick up on things as the story evolves.  I thought I’d share some of the thinking that went in to making this edit come together and have the feel it does.

******************************

Matt and Amiee share a number of things together.  They were born within 24 hours of each other and Matt celebrated his 30th birthday on their wedding day. Aimee a day later.  Hence Matt’s watch as his birthday present and the singing of “Happy Birthday” at the reception.

******************************

They both love dogs, and they even featured in Matt and Aimee’s ceremony so it was important to include them in the edit too.  And even though Matt and Aimee were getting ready in different locations Harry, their Schnauzer provided the perfect segway to cut between the two.

 ******************************

Matt goes for a run everyday.  ”It’s what he does”.  So we felt it was important to capture this and include it in their edit.  I felt the music also ties into this.  It has a constant beat reflecting at the start and end of the song.  So I worked the edit to introduce Matt at the beginning of the film capturing his run and then Aimee at the end of the edit as she walked the gravel road with her dogs on the way to marring Matt.  Both filmed with the glidecam to give a sense of experiencing it with them.

******************************

I picked up on this during the morning.  Matt and Aimee live in Birkenhead and overlook a green valley.  Aimee got ready there in the morning and you can regularly see Tui’s in the tree just past their verandah. Aimee commented on this and I knew their love for the outdoors so I made sure I filmed it.  Matt just happened to film the boys picking up the cake in the morning which had birds on it!  So that was cool to include too.

******************************

Anyway, Thanks for checking out the blog.  Feel free to comment through the Facebook chat dialogue below!
