A whanau affair .. Willie & Emma’s sneak peek!

Hi guys,

On Saturday, we headed out near Woodhill forest, to photograph Willie & Emma’s wedding day.

They had just arrived during the last few days from their home in Australia, to share their celebrations with their NZ friends & family.

It was a wedding based around their love for their children & their family – with all of them featuring in the ceremony.

One of the most special things was Willie singing his vows to Emma – something she had no idea was going to happen… just beautiful. There weren’t many dry eyes in the house!

Here is a little peek, at what we saw during a day hanging out with this beautiful family.

Sarnia Park wedding photos – John & Nina’s sneak peek!

Last Saturday, we photographed our first wedding of the season, out at beautiful Sarnia Park in Cambridge.

John & Nina were fantastic to work with – and their bridal party was so relaxed & happy!

We love shooting at Sarnia.. as it’s a venue we’re really familiar with, it always feels a little like playing a ‘home game’ … and gives us the chance to experiment with new things every time.

John & Nina both got ready on site, which meant we could float between the guys & the ladies – checking out what each was up to.

Nina’s gown was designed by Anna Schimmel – one of our favourite designers in the world – gorgeous lace, delicate details – a stunning dress!

The ceremony was held indoors – catering for the worst possible weather the tempestuous NZ spring weather could throw at them. Typically – the day itself was absolutely stunning – not a cloud in sight. That still didn’t stop a few nervous glances out the window though!

Sometimes, instead of avoiding harsh light & shadows – it’s fun to roll with them & capitalize on what nature is serving up.

An indoor ceremony also provides the chance for a grand, sweeping entrance down the stairs!

After the ceremony – we headed out the make the most of the gorgeous late afternoon light, slowly settling in the sky.
It’s rare that we’ve seen such perfect backlight out at Sarnia Park – one of the benefits of early spring!

Unfortunately, even though we were into spring.. the cherry blossoms at Sarnia Park were yet to come out… so we headed down the road to a spot we’d located beforehand with some gorgeous white plum blossoms.

Our last shot of the day, with the light fading fast, involved a bit of extra ‘oomph’ from our lighting setup, to really make the blossoms falling through the air light up against the sky.

Moana Sands & PawPaw Patch wedding photos – Joe & Chanel’s sneak peek!

Hi guys!

Our last wedding in Rarotonga this trip was very special – with our friends Joe & Chanel coming over for their tropical wedding.

Joe is the reason this website exists. He’s website designer extraordinaire and a long time surfing buddy. Chanel is his gorgeous wife (now! congrats!) who is a talented art restorer, painter, author, academic, and more.

It was a real privilege to be invited along to share in their day, both as photographers and guests.

So without further ado… some of what we saw.

Their ceremony was held on Rutaki beach, which was beautiful, with the huge surf crashing in the background. Andrea & Fiona from Wedded Bliss ensured that everything ran smoothly & without a hitch.

Remember that mention of the huge surf, crashing in the background?

Well. At one point, the surf came right through the lagoon… we sat there watching these waves rolling towards us over the lagoon…

And then there was the sudden realization… as the wave hit the beach… that it was going to come a looooonng way up! Cue a mad scramble up the beach, grabbing camera bags & gear as the water swirled past our ankles. Later that afternoon, waves were surging up and over the road all down the south coast – it was something quite cool to witness. In the next image, you can see the water around everyone’s feet and through the trees..

Joe, his brother, & Isaac – being keen bodyboarders – were watching the huge waves hitting the outer reefs, speculating as to their size. For anyone interested – here’s the same swell as it arrived at Teahupo’o in Taihiti, the following day.

Rainbows.

It was time to head out for a few shots on (what was left of) the beach… these were interspersed with mad scrambles back up to dry ground as the bigger waves washed right up the beach.

As we weren’t going to see the sunset from the beach where the ceremony took place, we jumped into the cars, and raced around the corner in the fading light to try and get a few shots before the sun disappeared completely.

I love the reflections in these ones!

It was then back to PawPaw Patch restaurant, where we had a delicious meal (I just can’t get enough of tropical gamefish – so fresh & tasty!) – followed by some really beautiful speeches.

Late in the evening, we had a play out the back of Moana Sands, where we set some lights up & spent a while testing various settings… so we were able to whisk Joe & Chanel outside briefly to capture this.

Thank you both for inviting us along to share in your wedding day – we had a really great time, and it was lovely to meet your whanau also. Enjoy these few photos – there are many more to follow!

Tamarind House Rarotonga Wedding Photos – Jason & Kirsten’s sneak peek!

Hi guys,

A couple of weeks ago, we were lucky enough to photograph Jason & Kirsten’s gorgeous wedding at the Tamarind House, in Rarotonga.

We love shooting at Tamarind – it’s big, open, has great ambiance – not to mention the beautiful fairy lights on the trees!

This particular day in Raro was windy!! Screaming in from the SW, we needed to adjust the plans slightly to favour the sheltered side of the island.

Jason’s father had carved these pounamu especially for the boys to wear – which was really special.

There were plenty of laughs throughout the day – these guys were the most energetic bridal party! I don’t think I’ve ever heard the Zulu vocals from ‘The Circle of Life’ sung quite so enthusiastically (or accurately!!)

The property they had rented in Vaimaanga was easily big enough to house everyone… so while the antics downstairs continued, the girls were finishing off their preparations upstairs – Kirsten’s Mum helped her perfect the flowers in her hair.

They decided to do their bridal party photos pre-ceremony – which was lovely, as we had all the time in the world to make our way from their beach, right up to the Tamarind House – with a few stops in between!

Stop one… the beach. About 20 metres from their front doorstep. That’s the life, huh!

Down the road, we had come across this cool field with a tree. Unfortunately, the field had a tree… and prickly little biddy-bids that stuck themselves all through the girls dresses! Once we discovered the problem though, we were already right into the field… so we stayed & captured a few shots while we were there.
Plus – it provided something to do on the car trip to the next spot!!

There was a bit of cool coral on the beach here (well, ‘beach’ being a relative term – there’s no sand, just big lumps of coral)..

Tamarind House Rarotonga Wedding Photos

Our last stop en-route to the ceremony was this great little track – so lush, green, and Raro!

Plus – the added bonus of a high vantage point for this dramatic, Jurrasic Park meets winding country lane, shot…

Down at the Tamarind House, the chairs were in place – as the local string band provided background music.

We had a few minutes, during which the sunset occurred. The rotation of the earth wasn’t really in question… we knew the sun would eventually go down… but would the prevailing clouds let enough light through to make anything look cool???

Answer? Yes.

Back at the Tamarind House, the light was fading fast from the sky, and the fairy lights on the trees came alive.

As the bridal party headed in for a much anticipated meal, we floated around to capture a few of the final details in the diminishing light.

Jason & Kirsten – thank you both so much for allowing us to share a part in your beautiful island wedding. We had a great time with you all – and maybe we’ll see you back next year for an anniversary getaway!
