Perspectives Photo + Cinema Xmas Party

You all know the drill. In the few weeks leading up to Christmas, everyone is posting on their Facebook pages about their work do, their husband’s work do… seems like any excuse is good enough for a Christmas party!

Well, we had a lot of excuses. It was our last day of editing before the Christmas break. We hadn’t had any kind of ‘launch’ party. And, our brand new certificate of incorporation had just arrived that morning. Done. Time to party.

But what can you do with a team of 5 people (and only 4 today, as Holly couldn’t make it) … hiring a bar was out…. live band for 4??? Nah. So – we went to the beach.

As Murphy’s Law dictates – we had just arrived & scattered our belongings in some semblance of a picnic, when a huge cloud came and blocked out all the sun. Bummer.

But as we watched, the cloud began to swirl in a circle, really quite fast – and we half expected a tornado to touch down right then & there. Which would have been cool. But it didn’t.

The boys had a competition… who can throw a rock the furthest? Amber laughed at us for this.

Auckland wedding videographer

Jared had brought along his pétanque set – the games became progressively more competitive throughout the evening!

When the sun finally broke through, the dark clouds at at sea made for an awesome contrast.

You can’t beat BBQ food on the beach. Well, you probably can… but this particular afternoon, there wasn’t anything in the world I would have preferred.

Auckland wedding videographer

I was wondering how the seagulls managed to know exactly the point when we were eating our meal – as they hadn’t really bothered us as we cooked, or any other time during the day. That’s when I noticed Jared was throwing them bits of food – ah-hah! Caught.

Auckland wedding videographer

No celebration is complete without a toast. We had a bottle of delicious (and WAY more fancy than usual) vintage champagne – which we thoroughly bastardized by serving in regular glasses.

Auckland wedding videographer

Time to bring out the big guns. This was high pressure pétanque now. First to 5. We readied the course.

Auckland wedding videographer

And it was all on.

Auckland wedding videographer

Jared was first to 5… and far too quickly… so we decided that must have been the warm up. Now was the real match. First to 10.

Auckland wedding videographer

To make things trickier, we started throwing into a bunch of bricks and rubble.

Auckland wedding videographer

Even these obstacles didn’t stop Jared from claiming the title though, in a close finish with Mat.

This is how much I trust Mat’s aim with a frisbee. Or rather – this is how confident I was that he would miss.

The sun sank below the sea – and we packed up, headed home, content that we’d had an awesome Christmas party… bring on 2012!

Working on Vomo Island … behind the scenes …

Due to the success and exposure of the Mt Ruapehu time-lapse I shot in August this year, Matt and I got a gig filming time-lapse’s and a promotional video for an island 20km of the coast of Fiji, Vomo Island.  (Its a tough life being a wedding filmmaker, I know).

All in all we spent 8 nights on the island.  We worked both during the day and through the night,  (I’m still not sure where the sleep fitted in).  We filmed turtles, a golf course, $9,000 a night villas, sunsets and too many palm trees to count.  5 course dinners became normal but the Kava still tasted kinda funny!

The two film’s we produced for them won’t be going to air until March-April next year but we thought we’d share some behind the scenes stills (thanks to Mat) of what we got up to anyway.

From the airport to the wharf: Our driver went "off road" at times to miss the traffic. The lack of suspension in the van made it all a little more interesting.

Here's me trying to make friends with one of the locals. He looks scary but all he talked about was the RWC and how 'we' won ... I had to remind him he was Fijian. He didn't care, they claimed it!

The contrast of mainland Fiji and Vomo Island was insane. We were in heaven.

Well I hope heaven's as good as this. We had 83kg worth of gear with us... and they carried it all the way to our villa.

Every guest gets a welcome song as they arrive on the island ... we were no different. We were both pretty stoked right about now.

Signing in, with Fijian bling and tropical smoothy ... i skipped the credit card bit. he he he.

Our villa ... with 24/7 air conditioning!

Our first day at work. We went scouting for cool locations to shoot ... it wasn't hard to find them.

Just giving my sponsors some airtime ... kidding

The wild side of the island ... and the wild side of Mat, there must be something in that kava.

Setting up for a sunset. It takes longer that you thing to get everything just right as you don't want to screw up a 3 hour time-lapse.

We got to film and showcase a $9000 per night villa. They throw in your own private butler with this package! ... This is where the 5D, 14mm combo kicked ass.

All we wanted to do was jump up and down on the bed. But professionalism took over so Mat just imagined what it was like to sleep in such a luxurious bedroom.

The perfectionist in me had to get the fan in just the right spot.

This was one of those "I love my gear" days! The Manfrotto Magic Arm was useful in so many shots. Such an awesome tool.

After testing out the casing with tissues it was time to try the real thing.

And hey if it doesn't work ... well that's what insurance is for!

but it did work so we went snorkeling!

This is Vomo LaiLai. A uninhabited island 2km of Vomo Island.

Me "attempting" to glidecam off the boat onto the beach.

Different ways to film palm trees. Oh i love that 14mm.

This is the start of our 4 course lunches. The life of a wedding filmmaker. Such a rough gig!

Having so much gear is a bugger when it comes to lugging it around. Mat shows me his dedication to the job. What a great assistant.

On the 3rd day we scouted the back side of the island. We did a stupid thing and didn't take any water with us. On top of that we took the hardest route up to the top of the mountain ... we drunk a ton of water that night!

More Magic Arm goodness.

We took a jeep with all our gear to the back of the island. It was perfect weather so we spent the night under the stars. At times we had 3 cameras time lapsing in different locations all at once ... we really earn't our money that night!

After a night under the stars we got back to our villa at 630am. Packed up and left the island at 8am for the mainland. A pretty epic gig to film. Keep an eye out here come march april when we post the final films!

McHughes Cheltenham wedding photos – David & Hannah’s sneak peek!

Hi guys!

Last week, we headed out to photograph David & Hannah’s gorgeous wedding at the Wilson Home chapel in Takapuna, followed by a reception at McHughes in Cheltenham beach.

It was a (rare, this summer!) stunning blue day – warm, but not too hot – perfect for a wedding :)

In the morning, we headed around to the boys’ hotel, to see what they were up to….

You become a little bit ‘public’ property on your wedding day.
Case in point.
David & his groomsmen… world famous in… somewhere!

Around at the girls, we saw Hannah’s gorgeous wedding gown – created by one of our favourite designers – Anna Schimmel.

Down at the Wilson Home chapel, their wedding planner - Lisa from Beautiful Events – had done an amazing job of setting up the chapel, with gorgeous custom chairs that gave it a really unique look :) The girls arrived, and Hannah & her dad made their way in…

There was a ring ceremony – where each of the guests held the rings & gave them their blessing. I love seeing people do this, as Amber & I did the same thing when we got married nearly 5 years ago – it makes me smile :)

These two images were taken at almost the exact same moment – this is one reason we love shooting together!

Matamata Longlands Farm wedding photos – Kyle & Stacey’s 10 year anniversary

Hi guys!

A few weeks ago, we headed down to Matamata – where we caught up with Kyle & Stacey, who were celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows – in a gorgeous ceremony at Longlands Farm.

We headed around to catch up with them as they got ready… 10 years ago, they didn’t have their 3 gorgeous children! The girls were very excited that they got to have makeup like Mum..

We tried to get some shots of the whole family walking down the pathway. But little Ryan just had too much energy!

Now for some sad news… A few weeks before their ceremony… they had a house fire, and lost pretty much everything. We’re stoked to have been there to help recreate some memories in their photos! And… the plus side… going to the ceremony in a fire engine :)

Longlands Farm in Matamata is a stunning venue – and it was so awesome that their celebrant from the wedding – Marilyn Holmes – was there 10 years later to officiate their renewal ceremony.

Their ceremony featured an exchange of roses – which they passed along for ‘safekeeping’…

We were back inside the reception, just about to leave, when Amber came racing in waving her camera.. and showed us a picture on the back of her screen… she had been out wandering in the field next door… and was very excited about the late afternoon sunlight. Kyle & Stacey needed no convincing – so we headed back out for a few final shots in the fading light…

Clevedon Auckland wedding photographers – Lance & Jane’s sneak peek!

Hi guys,

A few weeks ago, we headed down to the most gorgeous little tucked away property in Clevedon – where Lance & Jane held their intimate ceremony in the bush.

Out in Clevedon – we headed up to the ceremony location. Without doubt, one of the most stunning settings we’ve ever seen. There were handmade signs used to point the guests in the right direction, and count down the number of steps… and a little altar, tucked away in the bush.

Woodlands Gordonton Wedding Photos – Aimee & Philip’s sneak peek!

Hi guys,

A couple of weeks ago, we had the pleasure of photographing Philip & Aimee’s wedding out at Woodlands, in Gordonton. The weather was perfect – just enough cloud to make for some dramatic & moody skies… and enough sun to keep us warm!

Throughout the day, it was apparent just how much thought, time, and effort had gone into planning the finer details of the day. The end result was Woodlands looking spectacular, and some really cool personal touches.

Here’s a little peek at the day, through our eyes.

Aimee was telling us how she & Phil had been sitting for days, cutting & stitching 100 yards of these bunting flags! The girls were excited to arrive out at Woodlands and see the the fruits of their labour.

We love this.

When we walked into the room and saw Aimee’s dress hanging there… we were pretty blown away. Her John Zimmerman couture gown was one of the most gorgeous that we’ve seen. The lace, detailing, everything… just perfect.

One of the best things about getting ready in the room above where you’re getting married… is peeking out the window to watch guests arriving!

Woodlands + St Mary’s Gordonton Wedding Photos – Mark & Jessica’s sneak peek!

Hi guys :)

Last Saturday, Amber, Holly, and myself headed out to Woodlands in Gordonton, to photograph Jess & Mark’s beautiful wedding.

Our first stop was around at the boys’ place, where we caught up with Mark & his groomsmen as they donned their suits, ties, and various other accoutrements. Luckily for them, the day – although warm – wasn’t overly hot due to a cool breeze… a breeze which would prove somewhat problematic, later on!

Auckland Zoo Wedding Photos – Kayleigh & Iain’s sneak peek!

Hi guys,

Last Saturday, we had the privilege of photographing Iain & Kayleigh’s wedding at the Auckland Zoo.

For those who remember them – they were the runners up in the 2010 Life FM ‘Wedding Season’ competition… and we just couldn’t bear to see them gutted at not winning the final vote.
So – we offered to shoot their wedding free, too. And we’re so stoked we did!

Our day began around at the boys’ hotel, where Iain & groomsmen were getting ready.

Plus a whole line of meerkats. Epic!

Kayleigh & Iain had organized a little game for their guests… they were each assigned an animal, and had to find the one other guest in the room who was their animal match… and then get a picture in the photo booth with their partner. It made for some hilarious shots as people tried to act out what animals they were…

And a perfect day, rounded out by some beautiful speeches.

We also caught up with Iain & Kayleigh a few days after the wedding, for a super fun (and windy, and cold!) Trash the Dress shoot down at the beach… stay tuned for some pics from that soon.

Kumeu Valley Estate Wedding Photos – Jono & Sarah’s sneak peek!

Hi guys!

On the 11/11/11 – we headed out to photograph Jono & Sarah’s beautiful wedding at Kumeu Valley Estate.
The day was absolutely stunning – warm, sunny, and not a cloud in the sky.

Our morning kicked off around at the boys’ place…

Then we were off to the girls place – where Sarah had just finished doing all the bridesmaids’ hair & makeup herself, and was in the final stages of her own! Amazing!

Down at Kumeu Valley Estate, the guests were gathered on the lawn, and awaited the arrival of the cars. I love that you can drive right down to almost the ceremony area, so the guests can actually see the wedding cars arrive – so often we see these beautiful cars that drop the bride off outside the church & no-one ever gets to see them!

The ceremony was officiated by Peta Hardley – who is our most favourite Auckland celebrant! (and also Amber’s mum).

Jono & Sarah had a sand ceremony to signify their two parts coming together – and providing a really cool keepsake with the layered sands.

Sarah & Jono were keen to get a photo with the cars… so we needed to find a nice big space to park them in. As we were only just down the road from the Waimauku park n ride train station, we thought we’d swing in there for the space to get this shot. This meant we had to drive past Settler’s Manor, which also had a wedding on… and must have been just about to begin. Because – when we drove down the road, the staff started madly motioning our wedding cars to pull into their driveway.. and the photographer waiting outside began snapping away for the arrival of the ‘bride’…. they looked a bit confused when we instead pulled into the carpark across the road & all jumped out to begin photos with the cars!!

On our way back to Kumeu Valley Estate, we stopped in at an awesome field we’d discovered earlier in the day…
